Route 4 and Route 208 Reconstruction

In late 2000, the New Jersey Department of Transportation will begin a $20 million reconstruction on the Route 4 / Route 208 interchange in Fair Lawn. Flyovers (like at the Route 4 / 17 intersection) will be constructed to improve traffic safety.

The Route 4 bridge over Route 208 will be completely replaced with a new 4 lane facility. Route 4 will be widened (from three to four lanes) eastbound. Shoulders will be added in both directions and improvements will be made to bus pull-outs. Going east on Broadway, drivers will have a choice between a new Route 4 express road or a Route 4 local road with businesses on the right side.

The interchange will accommodate the County’s plan to connect two bicycle paths along the Saddle River: the 5 mile path from Ridgewood to Fair Lawn and the 3 mile bicycle path from Saddle Brook and Rochelle Park.

Although the interchange will be significantly safer, some residents at a recent Planning Board meeting expressed their concerns for some aspects of the project. To improve safety, motorists will no longer be able to travel on Saddle River Road across Broadway and the intersection of Route 4 and Blue Hill Road will be closed.

Pedestrian Task Force

Fair Lawn’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Task Force recently submitted its recommendations to the Borough Council. The recommendations include improvements in signage, pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalks, enforcement and education – in order to create a more pedestrian friendly environment.
