Transportation Updates

Updates on five transportation projects important to Fair Lawn readers:

- Route 4 / Route 208

- Morlot Avenue and Plaza Road

- Chandler Drive Traffic Light

- Pedestrian Improvements

- New Bus Service

Route 4/ Route 208

The State Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin reconstructing the Route 4 / Route 208 intersection when the weather warms up.

Note that when construction starts, if you are traveling southbound on Saddle River Road, the entrance to Route 4 East will be closed.  In order to go east on Route 4, you can take Plaza Road to Broadway or take Century Road to Paramus Road.

See Route 4 / Route 208 article from Fair Lawn News archives

Morlot Avenue and Plaza Road

Another project scheduled to begin when the weather warms up is the County’s work at the intersection of Morlot Avenue and Plaza Road.  Plaza Road will be widened to five lanes, new signals will be installed and there will be dedicated left lanes at all approaches.  New curbs, sidewalks and storm drain improvements are also planned.

Chandler Drive Traffic Light

Fair Lawn's Borough Manager, Barbara Saks, told Fair Lawn News that the Borough has requested a traffic light at the entrance to Fair Lawn Commons (the intersection of Chandler Drive and Fair Lawn Avenue)The Borough recently asked the County to conduct another traffic count at Chandler Drive.  She said the County is “somewhat more open to the idea of a possible signal, but nothing has been decided.”

(See story about Fair Lawn Commons from the Archives).

Pedestrian and Bicycle Recommendations

The Borough has installed curb ramps along Fair Lawn Avenue and painted crosswalks at most locations recommended by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Task Force.  Street lighting was also upgraded along the length of Fair Lawn Avenue.  Currently, “Yield to Pedestrian” signs (in the roadway) are being evaluated by borough staff.  The Borough Manager told Fair Lawn News that “the rest of the recommendations are really up to the County because it is a County road.”

Both the Fair Lawn Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Task Force and the Environmental Commission have recommended that a series of bicycle routes be set up in Fair Lawn.  Ideally they would connect with the Saddle River bicycle path, the library, high school and other key locations.  If you would you like to help identify bicycle routes, send an e- mail to  Fair Lawn News

New Bus Service

Because of the two-year New Jersey Department of Transportation construction project to replace and improve the overpass at the Route 4 and Route 208 interchange in Fair Lawn, NJ Transit has altered bus service for the Fair Lawn area.  These changes took effect in January.  The changes affect Routes 144, 164 and 175, and include the creation of a new Route 145 bus.
