Fair
Lawn Community Television: Channel 66
Fair Lawn Community Television (an independent public, education
and government access channel) offers videos produced by nonprofit community groups,
neighborhood organizations, social service agencies, and individual
citizens.
Most nights the station tries to show original programming. The
station's most popular features are 'Fair Lawn Talks' with hosts Art Murray
and Stuart Pace and 'Electric Football' with hosts Stuart Pace and Steve
Brown. The remaining hours are filled with a bulletin board of
community announcements and events. Only Fair Lawn residents
subscribing to local cable services can get Channel 66.
Candice Vivino, Producer and
President of Fair Lawn Creative Cable (an independent nonprofit program
provider for Channel 66) told Fair Lawn News that the station is looking for
all sorts of volunteers including: set designers, writers and producers,
fundraisers, camera operators, video and audio editors, make-up and
wardrobe. She said that "no experience is necessary and the station
will train volunteers to perform various technical work".
Local residents, led by Courtney Crean, are now working on a news program. Channel 66's bulletin board will announce the date of the first news show.
Fair Lawn News asked some station volunteers about their
experience with the station:
Steve Brown (camera
person, video editor, and co-host and co-producer of Electric
Football)
"I like the creative process and the
teamwork required to overcome the unexpected problems that occur on each
and every shoot."
Bob Wiener
(operates audio and video equipment)
"I
like to record
audio and video and feel that I help out in my own way: issues,
entertainment and information. And to be perfectly candid I like
recognition (seeing my name in the credits)."
Courtney Crean
(director of the news program)
"I get to pursue my interest in video and television
production, it gives me an outlet for my creativity. I really
enjoy the other volunteers. And, we have an opportunity to really
have a positive impact on the town, and believe it or not, a lot of people
watch and enjoy our programming. It's nice to give back to the community
in which you live in."
Kath Heytink
(manages community bulletin board, designed and manages the web
site)
"I enjoy
volunteering because it gives me
another outlet for my creativity and it also gives me a chance to learn
about the workings of a TV station. Candice's enthusiasm and passion for
what she does makes it all a very enjoyable experience!"
Stuart Pace,
(co-host
of the station's most popular feature, Fair Lawn Talks)
"I
enjoy performing as well as
the editing and camerawork. I have always
had an interest in bringing my warped views of life to other people via
electronic means."
Lori Ganci
(joined
the team in October)
"I
went to William Paterson for television
production but never pursued it professionally. As a
volunteer, I was put on a camera my first night and it was like going home. Everybody is wonderful
and welcomed me with open arms...I am willing to do any aspect of a
production and I am thoroughly enjoying myself."
Fior D. Hernandez
(valuable assistant)
"Volunteering allows me to get hands on experience in the field
especially being a William Paterson University student
graduating with a Communications degree. Creative Cable has
always provided me with a sense of involvement and teamwork. I like
the way we get together and get things done. I find that this type of
experience is very hard to find and valuable to me because it is
integral to my future success."
Amna
Khan
"I
am very proud to volunteer for FLCC because it gives me a chance to
experience the television medium first hand and learn the production
aspect of a television show. Plus my major is communications in college
and this has greatly helped me 'spread my wings' . Also it's nice to just
give back to the community of Fair Lawn being that my family has lived
here for 6 years."
