From the February - March 2001 Edition

Secaucus

When NJ Transit opens a new train station in Secaucus next year, they promise Fair Lawn residents:

- Faster train service to Midtown Manhattan

- Connections to all NJT Lines

- Faster service to midtown Manhattan

- Faster service to Newark

For the first time ever, Fair Lawn residents will be able to take a train from Fair Lawn to Manhattan without transferring in Hoboken.  The transfer in Secaucus will save commuters heading into midtown, precious minutes every day.

Work Underway:  The station is currently under construction at a cost of $450 million and is expected to be completed in June 2002. NJ Transit has already completed contracts to build access roads, foundation and the superstructure at the station site.  The New Jersey Turnpike Authority will be building a new  interchange that will allow motor vehicle access to the new station as well as the 600,000-square-foot office complex that will be within walking distance of the station.

Airport Link:  Another new station being built south of Newark’s current train station will connect with Newark Airport’s monorail line.  So, Fair Lawn residents will be able take to take a train to Secaucus and then transfer to a Newark Airport bound train.

More Riders:  NJ Transit expects the Secaucus Station will handle over 30,000 daily passengers.  Ridership along the Bergen Line (including Radburn and the Broadway Stations in Fair Lawn) is expected to dramatically increase.

NJ Transit is looking to add additional trains based on ridership, but scheduling has not yet been determined.  New rail cars and locomotives will be purchased before the Secaucus station opens.  Two years after that, NJ Transit expects to start running double decker trains.

Higher Property Values:  NJ Transit planners expect the Secaucus Station to  raise property values in towns like Fair Lawn that are close to train stations benefiting from this service.  That happened recently in some New Jersey towns when the Midtown Direct service to Manhattan was started.

Link to Other Lines:  At the Secaucus station, Fair Lawn passengers will be able to transfer to trains serving the other NJ Transit Lines (Northeast Corridor, Main Line, Pascack Valley and North Jersey Coast lines.)

Need for More Parking:  Fair Lawn’s Borough Manager, Barbara Saks, said that “Radburn Station is already short spaces, so the Secaucus Transfer will only make things worse.”  The borough is looking to expand the Broadway station and has already applied for a shuttle bus grant to take commuters from the Memorial Park parking lot to River Road bus stops and on to the Radburn Station in the morning and evening rush hours.  (See Broadway Station article).
