Omar's Restaurant 

Steve, a Fair Lawn News reader, sent an e- mail asking:  "I have lived in this his town for over 33 years and have never seen more than 3 cars in the parking lot of Omar's Restaurant.  How does it survive?"    

After receiving Steve's e- mail, a Fair Lawn News contributor checked out the restaurant at the corner of Fair Lawn Avenue and Saddle River Road.  She reported that the food was quite good and the service excellent in the nearly empty restaurant.  She suggests reading the yellowed 1971 restaurant review hanging in Omar's front hallway.  It provides some colorful background to both Omar and his restaurant. 

But the restaurant which has been around for 35 years, may not be around much longer.  In November, Fair Lawn's Zoning Board tentatively approved an application to build a 3,500 square foot Commerce Bank branch at the site.  The Smoke House (originally used for smoking meats) will be preserved.

The restaurant is in an 18^th century building that has been significantly altered.  It was originally owned by the Berdan family, French Huguenots who came to America in 1662.  The site may have also been a stop on the Underground Railroad. 

The Borough Historian, Jane Diepeveen, visited the restaurant recently to look at the basement, the only place where evidence of the building's construction is not covered. She told Fair Lawn News that it was converted into a restaurant in the 20^th century, first the Old Smokehouse then Emile’s and then Omar's. 

Ms. Diepeveen was married at the restaurant 48 years ago, before the porch was enclosed.  She fondly recalls “ the lovely staircase leading down from the second floor from which I threw my bouquet and the large rather circular entrance hall where we danced.”
