Borough Stops Commuter Parking at Synagogue Borough of Fair Lawn employees recently found out that Temple Beth Sholom had been charging $25 a month for commuters to park in their lot at the corner of Saddle River Road and Fair Lawn Avenue. Several bus lines pass by this intersection. When the Council found out, the Council instructed the Borough Attorney to send a letter telling the synagogue that they could not charge commuters to park in their lot, because no ordinance exists to permit this practice. The Council recently discussed this issue and these were their opinions: Mayor Ganz said he would agree to allow any nonprofit or educational organization to charge for the use of their property. The Borough will need to inspect the lot to confirm safety and that sufficient spaces are available for the regular number of parking spaces required. He pointed out that the concept keeps cars off the street. It allows organizations to use empty spaces for parking. Councilmember Etler indicated if they could decide a case by case basis, he might consider it. He noted that some areas would not want to allow that because the surrounding residents would not want it. Borough Attorney Richard Lustgarten felt the Council should be aware of all the areas that would be affected before making a decision. Deputy Mayor Adler objected to turning parking lots into a fee for parking. She suggested that commuters use the Saddle River Road lot. Councilmember Amato was not in favor of it either. He expressed concern about permitting more traffic to flow in the Borough. Unless they can restrict it to Fair Lawn residents, he would not agree.
