Pedestrian Safety Can the Council take actions to improve pedestrian safety? Tedeschi: The Council needs to reexamine the pedestrian safety report of several years back that was shelved by the current administration. Hyde: For the last few years our council has spent money to plop street signs down that cars use as targets. A nice try, but when it did not work they didn’t explore different avenues. I believe we can turn our crosswalks into graduated speed bumps and decorate them in red brick. I also believe we can make gradual dips in the roads. These methods have been used in towns like Ramsey and Parsippany and have been very effective. It is an affordable and permanent way to slow down the traffic and keep pedestrians safer. Caan: When I first was elected to the Council, I promised to put out pedestrian yield signs at the most dangerous crosswalks in town. That was done. I cannot say that that alone is enough to make our streets safer, but I encourage everyone to follow the law and stop and let pedestrians cross. The council with the County will place a new traffic light on Fair Lawn Avenue and Chandler Drive and also on Morlot Avenue and 17th Street. We are continually looking at new ideas to keep our citizens safe. Please everyone, slow down. Ganz: Most locations with pedestrian safety issues are on state or County roads like Broadway and Fair Lawn Avenue. Previously, neither the state nor County concurred with us that speed reduction on major traffic arteries was warranted. We've made some progress – a light on Chandler Drive, another on Morlot Avenue, has taken several years but is in the works for completion later this year. Our police force has given more tickets for in-town moving violations to protect our walking residents. We're the first community to try and regulate the new motorized scooters used by kids. Baratta: The issue of pedestrian safety should be one that all in Fair Lawn be concerned about. We are all in a hurry, it is the life we lead, but we must slow down for the sake of each other! We had temporary pedestrian signs posted, and that seemed to help a little, but those signs are gone. Studying other communities to see what works and what does not, is a good step to take. Other municipalities have implemented fine ideas that have resulted in a huge drop in pedestrian and bicycle accidents. Programs we can look into include; auto-free zones for pedestrians; well-lit sidewalks; pedestrian refuge islands and clearly marked zebra crosswalks.
