Do you feel that the protecting open space is an important issue?

Tedeschi: There are fewer than fifty acres of open space in Fair Lawn. Greed must be overcome with a desire to leave our children a legacy based on responsible government.

Caan: Protecting the small amount of open space we have is a priority. I was the first Council Member to say at an open meeting that I am for keeping Daly Field as open space. I think it is important where we can to also protect historical structures like the Naugle House as well.

Ganz: It is probably the single most important issue facing Bergen County today. That's why as freeholder I championed a County open space tax increase from a half cent to a full penny and also sponsored the change to allow 30% to be spent on local recreational amenities. The 22 parks in Fair Lawn are a testament to prior council's wisdom in preserving open space as are the millions of dollars that I have noted on as a freeholder for County open space initiatives. In a simple answer, yes!

Hyde: Absolutely. Additional development would bring Fair Lawn close to becoming an inner-city. I don’t know anyone who moved here from New York to bring the city with them. Most people move here to get away from the city. I think they came to enjoy air that’s a little cleaner, traffic that’s a little lighter and surroundings that are a little quieter. Our roads, our sewers, our entire infrastructure would be over stressed with additional development. Let’s redevelop what we have to state of the art before we put new development on open space. Once you lose open space, it’s gone forever.

Baratta: Fair Lawn is over 95% developed, what little open space we have left needs to be guarded. Of course, we need to keep up with the times, but this can be accomplished by revitalizing and revamping existing developed properties, not by erasing the green we have remaining. I have lived here all my life and it saddens me to see so much of our towns’ history being torn down in the name of “improvement.” We have lost Lamring Dairy, the Old Library Theater and now we are seeing the loss of the Naugle House and surrounding parkland, to name a few. This practice needs to be stopped, before there is nothing left to save.
