The Water We Drink

Do you feel that steps should be taken to improve Fair Lawn's water quality?

Tedeschi: Fair Lawn is blessed with excellent engineering and water departments. We need to encourage the employees of these two departments to build on their success by getting greater education in their respective fields and by participating in industry and trade conferences regarding their work.

Baratta: I no longer drink Fair Lawn tap water, and I do not know too many people that do drink it. Our water is tested and we are told that it is fine for consumption. We must understand though, that the testing is incomplete. There are thousands of known water contaminants that our testing does not include. The first step to improving our water is to improve our testing, then we can, more knowledgably, look into other available solutions, like carbon filtration, etc.

Ganz: Fair Lawn's water utility meets the highest state standards, but the high mineral content continues to be a problem for all of us. Our water and sewer pipes are more than 75 years old in parts of the boro and to keep our rates manageable – we reduced them this year– we regularly replace sections. We maintain a water engineer who works hard and the Council has generally followed his plan for capital purchases as well as current annual expenditures. Steps are taken each and every year.

Caan: Here in Fair Lawn we have three sources for our water, our own wells and the use of the water from 2 water companies. At various times each of these sources are used to some degree. Although I have heard a small number of complaints about the water, the only thing I have to drink in my refrigerator is Fair Lawn tap water. Water quality is constantly monitored and has consistently been well beyond the government’s standards for drinking water. Taste is subjective, but our quality is fine.

Hyde: Honesty is always the best policy. I refer you to my opponent’s water drinking incident during my campaign for council in 2002. In our home we use Fair Lawn water for everything but drinking. We drink from the Poland Spring. Not the most politically correct thing to say and not because we think there is anything wrong with the water, but bottled water just tastes better. We should revisit the process and look at other municipal systems to improve the taste while keeping the water safe.
