Pool and River Do you have any ideas for improving Memorial Pool and the Passaic River riverfront? Tedeschi: Memorial Pool needs to become a clean water environmentally friendly place, not a waste of 400,000 gallons of water per day. Hyde: Fair Lawn feeds the Passaic River 400,000 gallons of fresh drinking water every day. That’s one big water bill. You need only look to Woodcliff Lake as they have renovated a 37,000 sq. foot concrete bottom pool at the cost of $1,700,000. This is about $11,000,000 less than current estimates on the recreation center. The pool would be infinitely easier to clean and would generate more membership and increased revenue resulting in self sufficiency. Currently the borough subsidizes the pool as member dues cannot currently cover the costs. What does Woodcliff Lake know that we don’t? Ganz: We started by putting in new, beautiful sand. We followed by hiring Goose-Busters to clean up droppings or prevent them almost entirely. We've added new, clean showers and lavatory facilities to make the use there more pleasant. We made it multi-seasonal by arranging for an ice skating rink to be used weather permitting. We've added a bocce Court AND checkers and chess tables. We're talking with the river keepers about a pathway all along the Passaic, but that will be several years in the future. And best of all, we've kept the price a bargain for families ($125 a season)! Caan: I think the biggest improvement that needed to be made was accomplished last year and that was to get rid of the geese and all they left behind. Goosebusters is a huge success and in the first year, it virtually eliminated the goose problem. Due to that success, I believe that this year's pool season will attract even more members than last year. Several times last summer I walked the pool area and spoke to the members. The people who used the pool were overwhelmingly pleased with it last year and will be back this year. The riverfront must be coordinated with the state to become user friendly, I support the concept. Baratta: A number of years ago the town commissioned a survey and study regarding Memorial Pool. Many good ideas were presented, by the residents of Fair Lawn, on improving Memorial Pool. What happened to that study? We need to go back and revisit that information. We also need to look to neighboring towns, which have successfully revamped their pools with much success. Memorial pool costs the taxpayers plenty, while enrollment continues to dwindle. The amount of wasted water alone should be reason enough to look for alternatives. Fair Lawn has never seriously looked to capitalizing on our riverfront. Marketing to the proper establishments could be an avenue for our newly formed Economic Development Corporation. Another option to consider would be a nature path highlighting our unique fish weir, a precious part of Fair Lawn’s history that needs to be preserved.
