Better Off? Is Fair Lawn better off today than it was four years ago? Tedeschi: No, look at your tax bill and the costs of the recreation center, as well as the predominance of pay-to-play in the Borough, and you will see Fair Lawn is not better off.
Baratta: Our taxes have gone up an average of 10 percent per year over the last 6 years, yet I see the town I have grown up in slowly slipping away. Our government is more closed than open to the people. Fair Lawn, once a suburban community, is now being classified as an urban town. The precious, little open space we have left has been placed on the auction block for the highest bidder. Fair Lawn deserves better, and the people need to have their interests protected.
Hyde: If I thought it was, I wouldn’t be running for council. In the last four years our debt level has gone up 51%, municipal taxes have gone up $5 million, and residents have begun to vote down school budgets. Let’s look at the next four years. We have to look forward to a revaluation which will hurt the homeowner, a depleted surplus and costs that have been artificially deferred into next years budget in an election year. It’s not a pretty picture, but new ideas and fresh leadership can make Fair Lawn the envy of the county..again.
Ganz: Yes. I look at the rehabilitation of Memorial pool; the add-on west wing to boro hall to relieve police and building department congestion; the two new ambulances and firetrucks, planting trees every year, the new recycling trucks, the clean streets, annual road repaving, solid waste (garbage) and recycling collection, a town where snow and leaves are picked up, where police give residents top services, a new public works garage to save money on repairs, and a community where it truly is, as our town motto says, a nice place to visit but a better place to live.
Caan: I believe we are although the bar was set high by the previous Council Mayor Ganz led. For my part, I was able to add the Fair Lawn Prescription Drug Card, which has saved residents over $200,000, I created the Veteran & Volunteer Coalition for our emergency service volunteers and military veterans, and our new resident program to introduce our businesses to our newest residents. I am also bringing the Financial Literacy Network to Fair Lawn in June. River Road continues to upgrade and the new Broadway Special Improvement District and Economic Development Corporation will bring the same success to other business areas in town. The new community center will attract every age group and interest. The answer is a resounding yes!
