Getting Around Without a Car

NJ Transit has offered schedules and fares for years, but now they are really starting to take advantage of the web. Fair Lawn News tested out two relatively new features: a powerful Trip Planner and a sometimes useful alert system.  One lets you figure out how to get from your house to anywhere else in the state. The other gives you an update when there's a problem with your regular commute. See www.njtransit.com to try them out.

1. Trip Planner

What NJ Transit Offers: A travel tool that allows riders to find the easiest bus or rail option. You can type in any two addresses (like your house and the beach) and find out exactly how to get there by bus or train.

Our Experience: It's a really wonderful amazing powerful tool (sometimes).

We got clear and accurate walking and bus information, when we put in different addresses.

We found out that after school, kids can go from the High School to the Garden State Plaza in ½ hour. If you don't mind riding more than one bus or train, you can get to Bergen County Community College, William Paterson University, Point Pleasant Beach, and Valley Hospital

However, using the program for more than a few minutes, you start to see some problems. It doesn't know every address in Fair Lawn. (You can always type in the intersection where you live). We also got some strange results. Like an eight hour trip to Atlantic City. But, overall, it's an amazing tool.

Fair Lawn News recommendation: Before you pack your bags, confirm your trip with NJ Transit on the phone.

2. Personalized Information

What NJ Transit Offers: Anyone can register for personalized NJ Transit information including customized transit schedules, free weekday peak-period travel alerts for delays of 30 minutes or more and links to other transportation websites. The travel alerts can be received via computer or cell phone.

Our Experience: Over the course of several months, we received many messages that we didn't care about, but every once in a while, we did receive a useful message about the trip to Hoboken and Manhattan, from Fair Lawn.
