Spring 2005 Edition

What Fair Lawn Residents Do (And Don't Do) For Exercise:  Linda Rosen takes finds some residents who are walking, running, climbing and swimming to stay in shape.  Others, well, they're waiting until they retire.

Voting Yes on The Budget:  Mary Wallace, the newest member of the Board of Education,  explains why a Yes vote on the school budget is so important.

The High School Book Controversy:  People had very strong opinions after a parent complained that the book assigned to her child -- a high school freshman -- was completely inappropriate.

The History of Fair Lawn's Street Names:  Fair Lawn's Borough Historian, Jane Lyle Diepeveen, tells us how some of Fair Lawn's streets got their names.

Topps CleanersThe Toxic Mess on Plaza Road:  Zdena Nemeckova talks with Kathy Moore about contaminants found behind as many as 11 Plaza Road homes.  And, the Radburn Association responds.

Don't Try to Catch This Phish:  Fred Holzsager used to go fishing with his Dad at the Saddle River.  Now he'll tell you about about 'phishing' -- fraudulent email from people trying to steal your money.

Special Education in Fair Lawn

A generation ago, Fair Lawn public schools could deny services to children with disabilities.  Now, because of federal mandates, a large and growing share of our school taxes go towards 'special education'.  For some Fair Lawn kids it means a little extra help.  For others, it involves dealing with multiple disabilities.  These services cost more than 20% of our school budget -- up to $40,000 per year per kid.  Fair Lawn must provide these programs, no matter how we vote on the school budget.  And, because of advances in modern science and the growing use of fertility drugs, Fair Lawn schools will be seeing more kids with disabilities in the future.

Providing An Education For Every Single Kid:  Fair Lawn’s Director of Special Services, Dr. Joyce Beam,  explains that the school district provides whatever support or accommodations are necessary to educate our kids.

Children's Therapy CenterFor Kids With Severe Problems:  The Children's Therapy Center provides services for kids with major genetic disorders, severe developmental delays, visual problems, communication disorders and physical problems.  Find out how Tatum O’Neal, fertility drugs, the Saddle River, special education, parking shortages, and  basement flooding -- have something in common.

The Teacher's Perspective:  Radburn School's Mrs. Lustgarten on 'special' children in the classroom.

One Kid:  Zack Stein is raising money to help prevent birth defects and assist babies born prematurely.

When Some of These 'Special Kids' Grow Up:  The Opportunity Center on Fair Lawn Avenue.  It's sort of a place to work.
