Summer 2004 Edition

Joe Tedeschi on Being the Underdog

In June, former Fair Lawn Mayor Ed Trawinski received 211 write-in votes, just enough to win the Republican primary for Congress.

Running against the incumbent, Steve Rothman, is the longest of long shots for Trawinski.  In Rothman's four Congressional races, his percentage of the total votes has been 54%, 66%, 68%, and most recently 70%.

Fair Lawn News spoke with the one Fair Lawn resident who knows best.  In 2000, Joe Tedeschi ran against Rothman for the Congressional seat.

Questions and Answers with Joe Tedeschi

Why would Ed Trawinski run for Congress? The answer to that question is the same answer to the question; Why would someone go over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel?

Is there any chance Trawinski can win? There are still some people waiting at a lonely pier in New York for the Titanic to land.

Did you enjoy your campaign against Rothman?  I absolutely enjoyed running for Congress.  I got a chance to meet a lot of people and I had access to a lot of people I usually don't. There really wasn't much to do since he refused to debate the issues with me and virtually ignored me. Why even the League of Women Voters wasn't interested in holding a debate and told us so.

Did you think you could win? No. Let me re-phrase my answer.  No.

Did you get help from the state or national republican party? Not one red cent!

Do you think Trawinski will get help from the party? Why not, there are a lot of people in the Republican Party who have given him a lot of support in the past. My problem was that I didn't care to kiss anyone's ring for a few dollars in a futile cause. I also refused to accept any PAC contributions.

Do you have any suggestions for Trawinski that you would like to share? Sure I do. Ed, don't let them put you in a wooden barrel you know where its headed. Don't listen to their promises of future rewards for being a "good party loyalist".  Whatever they said they'd do for you forget it, they were pulling your chain.

Do you think Rothman is doing a good job? By all of the standards currently being used to measure an elected official he is. (1) He's raising a lot of money for his party. (2) He hasn't been indicted. (3) He hasn't been involved in any scandals. (4) His attendance is pretty good. (5) He's kept his distance from Bob "the Torch" Torricelli.

What's your guess on the outcome of the race? Rothman will win by a 72%--28% margin.
