Summer 2004 Edition

Q&A With The Two Fair Lawners Running for Congress

Steve Rothman

Ed Trawinski

1.  Why do you think you have won by such a large margin in the past few races?

I have taken the time to listen to the concerns and ideas of the people of Fair Lawn and the rest of our congressional district throughout Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic County. In turn, I have taken action in Congress to address those concerns and improve the quality of life for the people of this area. I think that based on my experience and effective record I have proven to the people of my district that I will fight for them and that they can trust me to work very hard on their behalf.

Having served four terms in Congress already, I have demonstrated that I understand that people in our region want good-paying jobs, less traffic congestion and aircraft noise, more federal support for schools, more open space, better access to quality, affordable health care, the best homeland security, and lower taxes. I have fought for all of these things and I have been very successful in bringing money back home to New Jersey to accomplish those goals.

1.  Why do you think Steve Rothman has won by such a large margin in the past few races?

The power of incumbency and the enormous financial advantage it gives; coupled with the recent redistricting which has made the 9th Congressional District a "safe" district. For example, so far I have $7,000 in campaign funds and my opponent has close to $1 million dollars.

2.  How can voters evaluate the effectiveness of a Congressman?  Do you think you have have been effective?

Voters can evaluate the effectiveness of a Member of Congress by identifying the issues that matter to them and seeing what votes and other actions their Congressman or Congresswoman has taken to address those issues. In my case, I think I have been very effective. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have brought home hundreds of millions of dollars for our area to fix our roads, provide new mass transit options, expand and improve our hospitals, provide police and increased security for our schools, save the 8,400 undeveloped acres in the Meadowlands, clean up and protect our environment, improve homeland security, while at the same time helping to create jobs. Additionally, these federal funds have relieved local state and property taxpayers from some of the added taxes they would have otherwise had to pay for these improvements. I have also taken action in other ways such as introducing legislation and getting it passed and signed into law to stop big planes from using Teterboro Airport. And I have always been responsive to constituents who need help cutting through government’s bureaucratic red tape.

2.  How can voters evaluate the effectiveness of a Congressman? Do you think Rothman has been effective?

Whether or not he or she delivers for the people of his or her Congressional District and for the people of the State he represents. In my opinion he is a nice person and on some issues he has done OK.

But also, in my opinion he has not been as effective as he could or should be because New Jersey is at or near the top of the states in terms of tax dollars sent to Washington and near the bottom of the states as to how much it receives back from Washington.

3.  What are the important issues that voters should consider when they vote in November?

There are many different issues that I think voters should consider when they vote in November. I think voters should look to see who would best improve their quality of life; lower their taxes; bring back as much federal money as possibly to reduce the tax burden on our people; strengthen homeland security; give more money to our school systems to improve our children’s education; reduce traffic; enhance our local hospitals; clean up the air; clean up the water; protect our open space; provide more recreational opportunities; and make our part of the world a cleaner, happier, friendlier place with a higher standard of living and a better quality of life. And I also think they should consider who will help create the environment that would allow many of those things to be accomplished while also ensuring that the country is successful economically, is just and free -- in a world that is more peaceful, healthier, and more cooperative than ever before.

3.  What are the important issues that voters should consider when they vote in November?

Certainly the voters should consider any issues they feel are appropriate. As a voter myself I would ask if my representatives are looking out for the interests of the district they represent or the special interests that fund their campaign war chests. I believe that the issues of homeland security & fighting the war on terrorism, job creation & economic security, full funding of special education and the no child left behind act, securing social security's financial health and accelerating prescriptive drug benefits for our seniors, continuing to address fairness for our veterans and their families.
