The Budget and Bleary Eyed Kids

According to Ray Jacobus, the Board of Education's Business Administrator, state funding for schools appears to be frozen. That is essentially a cut, since the funding does not keep up with inflation nor does it help pay for the additional students. He said that the funding is failing to keep up with the state required programs for disabled children.

The Board will be debating a budget and the voters will be voting on it in April.

Since the High School does not have enough space for their specialty classes (e.g, labs for the sciences and arts), the Board is now talking about expanding the Zero Period next year. That means more kids will be starting school at 7:05 AM.

One Fair Lawn parent noted that starting high school earlier is exactly the opposite of what many Canadian and American high schools are considering. Numerous researchers have found that younger children and adults function much better than teenagers in early morning hours. A University of Toronto study found that "if important basic classes such as reading and mathematics are taught in the morning, older school children will be learning this critical material at their less-preferred, non-optimal time of day, resulting in a poorer school performance."
