A Better Place for the Arts Center

The arts community of Fair Lawn is most likely very pleased with the aspect of having a new center and showcase for their talent. After the neglect the Old Library received, any change would be welcome. However, is moving to a new location the right decision?

Adding on to the rec center may sound like a good idea, but at what cost to the people who live in that neighborhood? Is it fair to add more congestion and parking owes when there are already enough during the rec center’s operating hours? What will draw people to an art center that is in an out-of-the-way location and not easily accessible?

It is clear that by selling the Old Library building, the powers that be are interested in ratables. I think this is shortsighted. If indeed the town has the money to build a new arts center, wouldn’t it be wiser to put it in a more visible location? Why not renovate or rebuild on the current site? The services and retailers on River Road would certainly benefit and the vacancies that have always been evident would soon be filled. It would be a magnet for new business.

A community theater and performing arts center, art classes, and art gallery in a visible location with the support services right around it on River Road has so much more appeal than a brick box in a residential neighborhood.

Fair Lawn is ready for a proper cultural center, not one attached to a rec center near a football field.

Oops

To whom this may concern: I am a resident in Fair Lawn and I'm a little annoyed. I receive your paper through no request of mine which is fine and appreciated but I would rather it not be tossed on my lawn.I have written you about this before and whom ever is delivering them has the annoying habit of tossing it at my flowers. My lawn is very big since I'm in a corner house. They can just as easily toss it under my tree which is closest to the corner but away from my plants.I would appreciate if this stops .If it is an imposition you can stop the delivery .That would be fine also. Thank you for your time.

Saving Some History

Fair Lawn News is delighted to have received two different e-mails that we forwarded to the Borough Historian. (Jane Diepeveen)

- Hello my family lived in fair lawn from 1930s to 1995. i have alot of material i would like to donate to the new museum. if any interest please advise and i will ship at my expense. i have yearbooks, photos, business paperwork, old tools made by my grandfather who was a blacksmith. the home he built is still at 5-23 river road. he also had a gas station that burnt down about 1953 at 5-11 river road, my parents lived there til their death around 1997, the house at 5-11 that is!

- I have come into possession of a sleeve of waxed paper milk bottle caps from the Lamring Dairy River Road. They are in Mint condition and each shows a different day of the week for expiration. If you would forward this message on to the Historical Society I would gladly donate one (if they wish) for there collection.

A Letter From the Board of Freeholders Press Office

The Freeholder Board unanimously approved a resolution introduced by Freeholder David L. Ganz and second by Freeholder James M. Carroll to authorize a Grant Agreement with Bris Avrohom for the Playground Construction Project in the amount of $71,463.00. This project will develop a play and learning environment based upon a more nature-oriented setting. Bris Avrohom wants to create a more interactive, stimulating environment for children to grow up in. "Investing in our parks and playgrounds improves the appearance of the county and enhances our sense of community and pride. We are targeting resources to improve our current fields, improve our ability to maintain them and to add features that today's children and families will enjoy," said Freeholder Ganz. "Every child deserves the opportunity to have healthy play opportunities," said Freeholder Carroll. The Bris Avrohom Playground Construction Project will give our county's children the access fun with the participation and support of their families and peers." "I support Freeholders Ganz and Carroll in their efforts to create more recreational areas that provide county children and families a secure environment that is stimulating, both socially and physically," said County Executive Dennis McNerney. "It will be a fantastic space where children can continue their playtime and make it their own."

Say Hi To Grace

Browsing through the Fair Lawn pages, wishing to learn more about Fair Lawn where my good friend, Grace Keckmer of Bellair Avenue lives, I came across your editorial. Having only just glanced through this site, i find it is another excellent way of discovering more of your town. Congratulations. May I also pass on my best wishes to my GOOD FRIEND, Grace and family please.

Overnight Parking

I don't think that unrestricted overnight parking is a good idea... As for the residents who lost their parking because the garages behind their homes were torn down to make way for townhouses, whose garages were they and did the planning board take into consideration the needs of the existing residents and the laws governing the parking of their cars? I am absolutely against overnight parking... It's bad enough were just across the river from Paterson... The Borough of Fair Lawn doesn't have to look like it too!

Where Is Chris?

(Note: The following is in reference to Escape From The World Trade Center)

Sirs: I am trying to contact Christopher Hardej from the world trade center tragedy as our school has written and performed a play called 'windows in the smoke' and it went to state competition and took a five minute standing ovation. We have been invited to Washington D.C. to perform this play for members of congress and possibly the president and first lady Laura. We have been able to contact the people whom we have drawn characters from except Christopher Hardej. If you could help us we would be grateful and if you would like to give Christopher our information perhaps he would like to contact us. Thank You
