My family and I give our heartfelt condolences to the Fair Lawn Police and the family of the officer that was killed last night. The Balbert Family

I was shocked and saddened to hear this a.m. of the loss of Officer Collura last night...I used to live in Fair Lawn, and it is just a wonderful borough with wonderful people and an outstanding police dept. My sincere condolences... J.P., Spotsylvania Co., VA

I am a Detective in Essex County who's wife is also a Police Sergeant in Essex County. We are both sadden by the loss of Officer Mary Ann Collura on the evening of April 17th, 2003. I can't imagine the pain you all must be going through at this time. May God bless the Collura family and the members of the Fair Lawn Police Department. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers.

"A Final 10-42" Why did you have to leave so soon? I had just talked to you earlier that afternoon. We were laughing and carrying on had I only known. Had I known how the afternoon was going to end all wrong. It hasn’t been the same since you’ve been gone. I heard the call and I was on the way, I’ll never forget finding you that day. It ripped my heart to see you injured like that. I did for you what you could not do filling your lungs with each breath, while others did the rest. I stayed with you till you were flown from the scene hoping to wake and find it all to be a dream. It was extremely hard to face the fact, you were gone and never coming back. You were a great cop and a good friend, but why did it all have to suddenly end. So tragically taken from this world your friends, family and wife. You paid the ultimate price and they all represent the supreme sacrifice. You served mankind well and did a thankless job that few would choose to do. Knowing what the consequences could bring, you accepted the task without hesitation, giving your life for our preservation. You were laid to rest with Honors in such a glorious way we will never forget. Bugles playing, drums tapping and bagpipes piping as the twenty-one gun salute echoed in the air while we stood at attention. Now I wake to another dawn wondering why it had to go wrong. Thoughts of you will always remain, but things are not the same------ since you went 10-42. by Officer Jeff Lyle

Being raised in the great town of Fair Lawn, I have a lot of respect and appreciation for the Fair Lawn Police Department. I was certainly taken aback to have learned of the savage death of Mary Ann Collura last night, she was a prominent figure in this small close-knit town and I am sure her absence will be greatly noticed. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends, as well as her fellow police staff. Jeremy R. Former resident of Fair Lawn

I worked in Fair Lawn at the budget rent a car for several years, along with many other police, Mary c. would stop in now and again. I sincerely regret her loss and pray her killers will be caught. When a tragedy hits so close to home the shock is that much greater. God bless you guys and God bless America... Angelo R Zafarino

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHIES FOR YOUR RECENT LOSS, MY FAMILIES PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU.

Our sincerest condolences to the department and to the Collura family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. The Billard family.

We just spoke just before it all happened, we laughed and busted and shared a smile. I cannot believe Mary Ann is gone. It all seems like a dream that we all will awake from. She was a great cop that went the extra mile for someone in need. My sincere condolences to The F.L.P.D., family and friends of Mary Ann, she will be missed deeply by so many, and never will be forgotten. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. A neighbor from Hawthorne

I’d like to offer my condolences in the wake of such profound tragedy. Officer Collura made a tremendous impact on me, growing up a troubled teen in Fair Lawn. She spent hours at a time chastising me, encouraging me to live up to my potential. Mary went the extra mile. She really cared. She helped my Grandmother and I endure through troubled times. Recently my Grandmother passed away. She would have been terribly hurt by Mary’s death, so for her, I offer consolation. Mary really has a place in both of our hearts. May strength be with us, as we grieve the death of a remarkable woman and a terrific police officer.

I am shocked and deeply saddened by the death of Mary Ann. I was fortunate enough to share a hospital room with her last year and got to know what a great person she was. I was there when she was told that she could not go back on the job and tried to cheer her up by telling her that all things are possible and knowing her she would manage to get back. She loved her job and the people that she worked with. I am very proud to have met her. Barbara Pattin OUR PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE FAMILY OF THE DECEASED OFFICER...JIM AND SHARON ULRICH 127 HEIGHTS AVE.

All of us at Frame it send our condolences to Mary Ann's family, friends and fellow officers. She will be deeply missed by everyone. Gail Stussi

The officers from Kean University Police Department wish to send our deepest sympathy to the Fair Lawn Police Department and family of Officer Mary Ann Collura.

Mary Ann - You were a role model to me back in 1985 when you were the only woman on the Police force and I was the only woman in the Fire Department. My prayers are with your family and the F.L.P.D.. May you rest in peace. MCJ

God bless Officer Collura, and grant serenity to her family, friends, and co-workers. May she rest in peace, accepting the praise she deserves. She laid down her life for her job. A fine Officer that I never met.

God bless Officer Collura, and grant serenity to her family, friends, and co-workers. May she rest in peace, accepting the praise she deserves. She laid down her life for her job. A fine Officer that I never met. With RESPECT, Another NJ Officer

I WILL MISS YOU MARY ANN ...

My condolences go out to the family and friends of my friend Mary Ann Collura. I had known Mary Ann for 29 years. We were friends in High School, both graduates of the class of '77 and spoke often since. She was an incredible athlete, a protector, kind, caring and sincere. She always took the time to lend an ear. Mary Ann, I will miss you dearly. Lots of memories, good times and laughter! You will always be in my heart and the heart of my family. Lisa (and Steve) Yourman Class of '77

I would like to take this opportunity to express sorrow for your loss. Just recently there have been a rash of shootings in NJ. About 2 weeks ago an officer from my department and Hoboken PD were shot. It makes you realize just how dangerous our jobs are and that everyday when we go out there we need to be careful. I only hope that the "individuals" responsible for this pay with their lives. God Bless Mary Ann, her family, your department and all the officers that risk their lives everyday in NJ. We shall never forget your sacrifices. Sincerely, Brendan W.

I'm so saddened by the death of an officer. as a corrections officer I know the dangers we all face day in and day out but yet we do our jobs to the best of our abilities and don't get the recognition we deserve or the pay we deserve yet we couldn't imagine ourselves doing anything else. we do these dangerous jobs because we believe in a it. I once saw a move where a quote was made that said what we do in this life echoes an eternity. Well her actions will echo an eternity and so will the actions off all police and corrections officer all over the country. May god bless her soul and keep her safe in heaven. Officer Gonzalez

Mary Ann was someone I looked up to long before I became an officer myself. I never told her that, I wish I did. She was so proud for me the day I became a cop. She is someone who will be loved and missed by so many. Mary Ann Collura you paid the ultimate sacrifice doing the job you were born to do. You will always be a hero to me, I wish I could have said goodbye. Take care my friend, you left your mark on so many of our souls including mine. See you out on the open road , Eileen Tierney

I would like to offer my sincere condolences for the loss of Officer Mary Ann Collura. I knew her very well while I lived in the town of Fair Lawn. I also had the privilege to serve with her while I was a Police Reserve in the town. Mary Ann is the person who 1st informed me of the Police Reserves in Fair Lawn. She was a friend who you could always trust to watch your back and showed kindness constantly. I will miss her very much and will honor her memory always because of the skills she taught me to help me along in life, the friendship she gave to me and the love and generosity she showed to me and others. I know the F.L.P.D. Honor Guard will do their very best to honor this excellent woman who gave her life in the line of duty to protect others and make sure they were safe. Michael Trigger

Condolences from Colorado. My wife and I spent many happy days in Fair Lawn in the 50s and early 60s. My wife graduated from Fair Lawn H.S. in 61. We are both sad to hear of this tragedy. We both said a prayer for your fallen officer at Good Friday Services today. Our prayers are with the Fair Lawn Police Department and the family of the officer killed in the line of duty. George and Judith Lenormand

Myself and my fellow NYPD highway patrol members are very sorry for your loss. We know how you feel right now and our prayers are with you. May god bless you all Alan Vaccaro

The Fair Lawn Rescue Squad sends its heartfelt condolences to the Fair Lawn Police Dept. and the family of Officer Mary Ann Collura , killed in the line of duty 4/17/2003.

I grew up living right behind Mary Ann. Our yards were connected so it was easy for us to get together and play. She was my "childhood" best friend. I have many happy memories growing up in the neighborhood all of which Mary Ann and her family were a part of. I attended her graduation from the Police Academy. Mary Ann always looked out for others! She was a protector, and a kind, loving person. I am totally in shock by the news and my deepest sympathy goes out to her mother (Lynn), her brother Paul, sisters Pat and Linda as well as the rest of her family! It is a great loss to everyone, but Mary Ann was in a job she had always wanted to do her whole life, she knew the risks and took them. I am proud to have had her as a part of my life and memories! Dona Hite

Mary Ann was a wonderful, hard-working, dedicated Fair Lawn Police Officer and a wonderful human being. There was never a moment when she was not willing to give of herself to anyone and everyone. Her death is a horrible tragedy and she will be missed very much by everyone in Fair Lawn that she served so well. I hope her killers are found soon and put to death; they do not deserve to live in this world.

A horrendous crime has taken the life of one of Fair Lawn's finest. Officer Collura help the citizens of Fair Lawn whole heartedly. I will never forget driving with my friend we were on Plaza Rd coming up to Morlot Ave when I saw the police lights come on and it was Mary Ann who approached the car she was nice and explained what I did instead of issuing a ticket with points I received a lesser ticket with no points. Mary Ann was the first officer of Fair Lawn to give me a ticket that was 12 years ago I actually passed by that area today it was a strange feeling she was one of the nicest cops in town she will be missed Thanks Chris formerly of Fair Lawn now in North Haledon

The only thing more tragic then when a police officer dies in the line of duty has to be when the officer is from your own department. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain that the officers of the Fair Lawn Police Department must be experiencing as a result of the death of Patrolwoman Maryann Collura. My most sincere sympathies and prayers to Maryann and her family, friends, and colleagues. Andrew @ NJLawman.com

Our deepest sympathies to the officers of the Fair Lawn Police Department. We will be there next week not only for her family but for you. Rest in peace Maryann. Freehold Borough Police Department

I think its a lovely tribute to post personal info about a fallen comrade. The newspapers and press never cover enough of the person that was taken from us. It was nice to read about the officers history in the community and her dedication to the job. We can see this woman as a person, not just a police officer. And we all hope this type of posting is never necessary again. Be safe. -steve, Nutley

I didn't really know Officer Collura but our paths had crossed from time to time and she was always polite, helpful & pleasant. She was the chatter of my graduating HS class for being the town's first female officer. She was a very nice person and her murder is a tragic loss to the entire community she seemed so proud to serve.

I wanted to thank the Fair Lawn Police Dept. for this opportunity to share in the grief felt by the whole community. I have known Mary Ann since we were in Kindergarden and have remained life long friends. Whenever I needed anything, all I needed to do was call her and she was there. Every year when Milnes had their carnival, Mary Ann would make sure she gave my daughter money to spend on herself. She was a terrific police officer - scarey to those who did not know her, but so incredibly compassionate, gentle and kind. My family and I feel a huge sense of loss and will miss her more than words. My condolenses to your entire force. I know she loved her job.

I am shocked and saddened by the death of Officer Mary Ann Collura. I lived in Fair Lawn for 33 years, and I remember when Mary Ann got on the force. I shared quite a few ambulance calls with her when I served on Fair Lawn's Corps. She was a dedicated and loyal person who always went the extra mile. She was tough, but she had a heart of gold. My deepest condolences go out to her family and the members of the Fair Lawn Police Dept. I sincerely hope that the person who did this is caught and given the proper justice. Fred C. Hirsch

Having grown up in Fair Lawn years ago, I was shocked to hear the sad news of Officer Collura's death. I take it for granted that people I know are around every day, from one day to the next. It's not until someone is gone that I realize how much they're missed and what a better place they've made the community for everyone else. I'm sure another worthy individual will one day step in her place, although it can never be the same. The Collura family has my sympathies, as does the police dept.

My wife JoAnn, my children Megan and Matthew and I are deeply saddened by the death of Mary Ann.Police Officers put their lives on the line everyday for us to live in safety. We go about our business thinking that this type of thing never happens in our town. I pray for her family and her Fair Lawn Police family during this sad time. God bless her, God Bless you, and God Bless us all, Keith Brown 23-05 Ellington Rd

I spent the earliest years of my life growing up on Plaza Road North. Even now, I remember the joy and innocence of childhood, of swinging from the backyard tree and looking over the fence as the freight trains went by. As a career military officer, I feel a shared heritage with those in law enforcement. By all accounts, Mary Ann Collura was a kind and considerate individual who went about her life with a sense of quiet dignity and purpose. Her dedication to her community and devotion to her calling was an inspiration to all those priviledged to cross her path. My sympathy to her family and to those proud and brave men and women of the FLPD. May God bless her soul for all eternity. Always a Cutter. Lt Col Dana Stabin, USAF (Ret)

Rest in peace. Marika E. Buchberger New York, New York

Mary Ann used to always beat the boys at arm wrestling in Jr. High School. She's with the angels now, and their arms probably hurt pretty bad by now, and Mary Ann is smiling. Class of 77

To "A Good Cop" and NJ Honor Legion member.......Rest in Peace S. Ragen Fmr. President (2001-2002) The Honor Legion of the Police Departments of the State of New Jersey

Thanks for having this available to all of us. My family thanks you all for your protection, and caring. Sincerely, Kathy Kortes

I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Mary Ann. I work at Hawthorne Chevrolet and had the honor of knowing Mary Ann and working on her car. She always came in and said "hello" to me. She was a great person and police officer. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Again it was an honor knowing such a giving person. Ed Marzalik Hewitt,N.J.

When I was first hired in my department, Mary Ann made a point of stopping at a motor vehicle stop I was on, and backing me up. She was so enthusiastic and helpful about the job, wished me luck, and called me just to make sure things were going well. When she arrived on a scene, you just knew she had your back. In 2000 she assisted again at a violent confrontation with a carload of people with crack, and with her assistance everyone was apprehended. It is hard to imagine that she won't be out there- she had something that you just can't teach- she really, truly CARED, about fellow officers, the public, and "The Job"

My wife and I send sincere empathies to Officer Mary Ann Collura's mother and family, as well as all co-workers and law enforcement "family" on the line of duty supreme sacrifice that Mary Ann gave in devotion and dedication to her calling as a police officer ... We would invite you to visit the web site a deputy set up for us following the LODD of our only son, Officer David R. Payne, Lewiston (Maine) Police Department ... it is given as a tribute to all of our brave "heroes" who serve: www.onlyoneson.org Barb and Ray Payne

My prayers to the family of Officer Collura. Lance Wilkinson

I was lucky to know Mary Ann personally - all that is written and all that is said does not begin to sum up Mary Ann. I as many others will miss her professionally and personally. Honey Spirito, Sgt. Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.
