High School Musicians March Down Main Street

by Arlene Liebman,

President, Fair Lawn Friends of Music

Fair Lawn High School in Disneyland

We can truly be proud of our Fair Lawn High School musicians. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Kafer, band director, the marching band and color guard, orchestra, symphonic band and wind ensemble, were invited to perform in Disney World recently.  Not only did they perform beautifully as an ensemble in the Disney Marketplace, but they also had the exciting honor of performing their championship music as they marched down Main Street in the Magic Kingdom the following day.

Last November, the 74 members of the Fair Lawn High School Marching Band and Color Guard competed against 35 other regional bands in the United States Scholastic Band Association East Coast Circuit Competition. The Marching Band and Color Guard had the highest score of 90.35 in the competition, and captured the school’s first championship title in the history of Fair Lawn High School. When they finally left the J.B. Crum Stadium in Allentown, Pennsylvania at 1:00 in the morning, they were exhausted, but exhilarated beyond anyone’s imagination, because they were coming home with the title of the United States Scholastic Band Association Champions of the Group II-A East Coast Circuit.

Under the direction of Mr. Paul Kafer and his dedicated staff, the marching band has been on a steady rise through the ranks of high school marching bands in the eastern United States  The borough council's subsequent proclamation of Fair Lawn High School Marching Band Day and the championship banner now hang proudly in the band room.

Congratulations!  We are truly looking forward to hearing our talented musicians in the spring concert.
