        Spring 2003 Edition

Letters To Editor

Bergen Avenue School

Sorry to read of the sad fate of this school still standing after more than a century. I hope its eligibility for historic status is secured.  Fuel tanks and busses seem like quite a stretch as "educational purpose". I have so many happy memories of attending that school from Kindergarten through Grade 4. My best wishes for a successful preservation effort.

Carol Bennett

Note From the Editor: We are not aware of any efforts to designate the former school with historic status. However, the School Board budget does contain funds to fix up the former school.

Washington School

I just read my first issue of Fair Lawn News and was distressed to read about the deterioration of the Washington School building. Contrary to the information in the article, the school was still serving children at least as late as 1952 (and I believe later). I attended half of first grade and all of second grade there (through June 1952) while I lived in the farmhouse for the Acker Estate (my parents were Ross and Jean Eberhardt). I currently live in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and I attended my 40th Fair Lawn High School reunion last October, reconnecting with many old friends from the Class of 1962 -- several from Washington School.

I hope that some way can be found to preserve the building and to use it for the purpose for which it was originally intended -- the education of the children of Fair Lawn. Sincerely,

Theo Eberhardt MacGregor

Competition

In my social studies class yesterday our teacher talked about how competition improves the quality of products and lowers costs. I said that the competition between Fair Lawn's local papers and web sites has led to much better free products. Do you agree?

David Miller

From the Editor: I think you deserve an A in Economic. However, you should ask your English teacher about the use of commas.

Overnight Parking:  No

I agree with NO overnight parking in Fair Lawn. However, issuing case by case permits when situations change (that are outside the homeowners control) such as the parking garages for residents of 318-328 Plaza Road North, would be fine.

Robert Steinmetz

Overnight Parking: Yes

Mr. Paredes has said a mouthful. Prohibiting of overnight parking is counterproductive and valueless, it seems to me. Can anybody tell me a good reason why we have the overnight parking restriction?

Allan Fineberg

From the Editor: Look on the left side of the screen and find Archive / Search.  If you search on the words 'Overnight Parking' in Fair Lawn News, you'll get lots of passionate opinions.

Apprecation and Safety

I will say how wonderful [Fair Lawn News volunteers are] to have given us this online news with so many tidbits and useful information. It is so enjoyable and I look forward to it. Also, Fairlawnites can express themselves freely and without fear.

I want to comment about is how dark it is on our streets at night. We need more lighting. I am sure that other folks feel the same. It would make things so much safer for the police, fire dept and ambulance corp. Another factor is plain ol' tripping and falling on sidewalks that are cracked.

Also, I strongly agree with Candace Vivino in the (Aug-Sept) issue of the Fair Lawn News topic regarding printing arrests. I feel that only convictions should be printed.

I want to take this opportunity to say that Sgt. Boyle of our Fair Lawn Police Dept, has done such a wonderful job with the service that the Fair Lawn Police Dept provides. We called Sgt Boyle to survey our house for safety suggestions pertaining to sensors and security etc. He was so polite and thorough in his report to us. Again, please make known this free town service of security checks in private homes.

Also, thanks to the police for the patroling of Banta Place. I see police cars there frequently and since we are a bunch of dog walkers and dog lovers, Banta Place is usually isolated at night and it is good to see the police cars.

Diane Albarella
