Vote For the Seven Wonders of Fair Lawn

Readers have nominated numerous Wonders of Fair Lawn.  Below are the top 21 (some people think it's a wonder that Fair Lawn has so many wonders).

Now it's time to cut it down to 7.  Fill in the form below to participate in Fair Lawn News' vote.  First, scroll down to read what people wrote about these nominees.

Note that some wonders didn't make the top 21, like "How Fair Lawn got 3 Dunkin Donuts before Paramus got their first -- See Paramus doesn't get everything first"

Diversity

- The ethnic, religious, cultural and racial diversity of our citizens and the tolerance and acceptance that is an everyday occurrence which honors and respects that diversity.

- Where else can someone have on one block, Spanish, Russian, Israeli, Indian, African American, Yugoslavian, Irish, and Italians.

- Diverse cultural identity, religion, language, and excitement. How many towns do you know of that can have such diversity without a conspicuous segregation amongst the masses. If variety is the spice of life, then Fair Lawn has much to savor.

- A harmonious blend of people of different religions and cultures, proud of their backgrounds, but who are even more proud to live together as Americans.

Volunteer Spirit

- The hard work, dedication, the willingness and spirit and loyalty of so many of our citizens to contribute day in and day out to the well being of our community.

- Our caring, dedicated volunteers who coach, fight fires and respond to emergency calls as well as all of the neighbors who work to make our town a better place.

- Emergency Service Providers (Police, Auxiliary Police, Volunteer Fire Department, Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Volunteer Rescue Squad, Nursing And Welfare Workers, And Our Volunteer Emergency Management), Town Committees (Planning Board, Zoning Board, Environmental Commission, Library Board, Rent Leveling Board, Garden Committee),  Business (River Road Improvement Corporation, Chamber, Rotaries, Lions Club), Religious Instituation (Churches, Synagogues, Hadassah, B'nai Brith), Sports And Entertainment (All Sports Association, Fair Lawn Football Association, Fair Lawn Ice Hockey, Fair Lawn Street Hockey, Forgot Rescue Squad, Aux PD, Emergency Nurses, Cable TV, Farm, Fair Lawn Lightning), Education (Board Of Education, PTA's And PTO's, Fair Lawn News, Marathon)

- When it comes down to the nitty gritty people of Fair Lawn can band together to make a better community

400 year old fishing weir in the Passaic River

- Pre-historic Lenni-Lenape Indian fish trap in the Passaic River.

- Stone structure, basically a wall of rocks laid in a V-like shape, was built by the Indians in the Passaic River to trap fish as they swam downriver. As you drive across the Fair Lawn Avenue bridge toward Paterson and look to the right, you will see what looks like a line across the river. That's it. It's more visible when water levels are low, of course.

- It is the most intact pre-historic (pre-colonial) structure in New Jersey.

- The early Dutch settlers who lived in this area called it a "sloot" which is the Dutch word for "weir" or fish trap. As a result, the entire Fair Lawn region became known as "Slooterdam."

Historic Radburn

- The wonderful separation of people from motor vehicles.

- Heaven on Earth

- An escape in the middle of suburbia

- The uniqueness of Radburn in its concept and its continuing viability is also a wonder.

You can also read the nominations from the Borough Historian, and the candidates for Council and Freeholder in this edition.

The Fair Lawn Water Tower

- Visible for miles and miles and is almost 200 feet high.

- An eyesore for some, but a beacon of identity for others.

Historic sites

- The Naugle House and the natural area around it at the Saddle River, Garretson Forge and Farm, The Cadmus House, Radburn Train Station, Grange Hall, Dutch House.

The Fair Lawn school system,

- The strength and quality of our educational system.

- The reason many of (and our parents) moved here

- Our educational system is one of excellence, due to its administrative staff, teachers and the terrific support given to the schools by our PTO's and PTA's.

- The Community School continues to enrich Fair Lawn through its adult education, involvement in the arts, and recreational programs for our children.

Memorial Pool

- The park and pool were built by volunteers.

- The central swimming hole for the community established well before man made pools were popular.

- A wonder to every kid who ever spent a summer hanging out there.

- Memorial Pool you can see the bottom 10 feet deep.

Fair Lawn Library

- Provides access to all the rest of the wonders of the world, for free

- People in Fair Lawn do not appreciate just how wonderful this library is, and should all use it more.

Saddle River Park

- Including the new bike path that goes under Route 4.

Playgrounds

- There are so so many.

The maintenance of a "small town" feel

- It still has that small town friendly warm feeling. despite being part of a heavily congested Bergen County

- The advantage of having several small business districts instead of one big downtown.

- How many towns maintain the small town flavor with enough zest to lure its offspring back for a second dose of home.

- The Borough continues to attract previous generations back to raise their own families in a pleasant and positive environment.  The whole experience from School System, All Sports, the volunteer and professional associations offer a wealth of involvement that many desire.

Neighborhoods

- The uniqueness and diversity of our various districts such as Columbia Heights, Lyncrest Section, Warren Point, South Broadway, Radburn Historic District, Ferry Heights, Saddle River Road, Memorial District and River Road.

- The reason why people didn't want a central kindergarten center for the whole town.

- You can actually live in a neighborhood where you know everyone there and you can trust your children to go to their homes (very rare nowadays)

Being able to walk

- Sidewalks

- Can walk to do light shopping, errands and to the train.

Location

- Fair Lawn's location is ideal for travel to many parts on modern and comfortable transportation hubs--the highways, the trains, the buses, even ships.

- It is so centrally located that the convenience is relatively unparalleled, particularly in light of the fact that the Borough has maintained a reasonable range of prices for housing relative to its vicinity.

- Close to Rt. 4, 17, 20, 80, 208, Parkway.  2 train stations.  Bus to George Washington Bridge and Hoboken. (Soon to Secaucus for transfer to New York)

- You can live in this town and have 4 major malls within a 10 mile radius and if you can't find it in a mall it's on Route 17 or Route 4.

- The fact that Fair Lawn is a short drive to anywhere: NYC, Jersey Shore, Pocono Mountains, Catskills, Sussex County and everywhere in between

Local business owners

- They not only provide easy and affordable access to the goods and services that we use in our everyday lives, but also are active in supporting our local community organizations and events through sponsorships and donations

Radburn Plaza Building (the one with the clock on top)

- Most handsome structure in town

Nabisco Factory

- The aroma of chocolate chip cookies drifting over town

- Where 50 foot long Fig Newtons are cut into cookies with high pressure water hoses.
