Population
Everything
continues to go up in this area . . .taxes, home prices, utilities, age,
and by the way, so does the population!
If
you haven't heard, according to the U.S. Census Bureau for 2000, Bergen
County's total population has steadily increased from 825,380 in 1990 to
884,118 in 2000 and is also the most populated County in the State of New
Jersey. This trend is not particularly unique to the region where
population numbers have increased in all of the surrounding suburban
counties including New York City. Of course, the Borough of Fair Lawn is
not immune to this population trend. Fair Lawn's population has also
increased from 30,548 in 1990 to 31,637 in 2000. Our Borough's median home For those who can remember back in the 1960's and 70's, the County's as well as the Borough's population were actually even higher then our current population! The Borough's population was 37,975 in 1970. You ask how this is possible? Well, during the 1980's the County as well as the Borough experienced higher death rates than birth rates, which resulted in a decrease in our total population during these years.
Since
then our population has been rising again due to the migration of
immigrants (mainly Asians and Hispanics within the County and Russian Jews
within the Borough) who have moved and relocated to this area. The influx
of immigrants have provided for a greater population diversity and
vitality. Even
though many unpleasant things continue to go up, population increase is a
relatively positive attribute in the study of demographics. The reason why
