Pools To Open

Press Release From the Borough of Fair Lawn

May 24, 2002
For Immediate Release
For further information: Contact Mayor David L. Ganz 212 517 5500 or Municipal Clerk Joanne Kwasniewski, 201 794 5340

"Fair Lawn Pools at Memorial Park and at the Dobrow Sports Complex will be open for business by the first week in June," Mayor David L. Ganz said May 24.

"As a result of the efforts of Assemblyman Matt Ahearn (Fair Lawn) and Senator Joseph Coniglio (38th District, Paramus), the Department of Environmental Protection has decided to give Fair Lawn's bathing beaches a waiver from certain drought-related restrictions that might otherwise have prevented them from opening."

Assemblyman Matt Ahearn's district office sent a letter to Ganz on May 24 advising of the breakthrough.  The opening of Memorial Pool, which for many years opened in time for the end of school, but last year opened Memorial Day weekend will now open during the first week of June, as soon as an executive order is formalized.

Walsh pool, which uses only Borough well-water that is dedicated to the Dobrow complex, and not purchased water from the Boro of Fair Lawn's two purveyors, is being filled and will be available for swimming May 25.

Use of the facilities during the month of May and June is limited to Fair Lawn residents and a few, smaller  neighboring municipalities who have inter-local agreements with Fair Lawn. The Borough Council, including Deputy Mayors Marty Etler and Steve Weinstein, and members Allan Caan and Victor Amato, together with Mayor Ganz, voted to make swimming free to all Borough residents until June 30.

"This is good news for the people of Fair Lawn. Not only will the summer campers have a convenient place to swim, but Boro residents will be able to use two different facilities all summer long," Ganz said.

Pool registration for the summer is ongoing.  The council voted earlier this year to retain the same rates as last year, $125 for a family, $60 for adults, $40 for juniors, and to lower rates for seniors seeking to use the pool to $10 per person for the entire pool season.

Summer camp registration is also available for those campers who want to go to Camp Cherokee or the "Small Fry" division.   Further information is available from the Department of Recreation.

Letter From Assemblyman Ahearn to Mayor Ganz

May 24, 2002

Honorable David L. Ganz
8-01 Fair Lawn Avenue
Fair Lawn, NJ 07410

Dear Mayor Ganz:

I wish to bring you up to date on the current information I have received from the Department of Environmental Protection regarding the filling of Memorial pool.

My office has been corresponding with Mr. Gary Sondermeyer, who is the chief of staff to DEP Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell.  Mr. Sondermeyer has given me a verbal approval that Fair Lawn may begin filling Memorial pool and stated that the written approval will be forth coming sometime next week.  It is my understanding that the pool will be allowed to open under an executive order from the commissioner of the DEP.

Should you wish to discuss this further please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Matt Ahearn
Assemblyman
