Crossing Broadway At The Station

At a recent Borough Council work session, the mayor pointed out that the local council has made securing state funds for the purpose, due to its concern over what, it contends, is a serious safety problem for train passengers trying to cross busy Route 4 from the south side of the highway, to get to the station. Acting Borough Manager Joanne Kwasniewski told borough officials that the state would like the two municipalities to enter into a joint maintenance agreement as a prerequisite for obtaining funds, since the walkover would also impact upon Elmwood Park territory. While Kwasniewski noted that professional staff people within the neighboring municipality seem enthusiastic over the idea, she said the wild card in the mix is the elected governing body - which must sign on to the plan. Given Kwasniewski's comments on the need to recruit Elmwood Park, the borough's objective could be much more difficult going it alone. Still, Ganz asserted that the walkover is vitally important, and that the borough must be prepared to serve as its lone advocate.. "I think we should agree to maintain it whether Elmwood Park agrees to come on board or does not agree with us," the mayor told Kwasniewski. He added, "I hope they would be able to agree with us. The (Fair Lawn) Planning Board is on board, and we (council) all agree that it has to be maintained." Note: Mr. Neidenberg is a talented local writer looking for a job.
