December 2002 - January 2003 Edition
How the Democrats Won

By Adam Silverstein

Campaign Manager, Steve Weinstein for Council

First, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our newly elected and re-elected officials. On November 5, 2002 voters from Fair Lawn took advantage of their right to vote. Faced with the decision of which candidates would better serve our community interests, residents went to the polls to elect our leadership. With an overwhelming majority, Fair Lawn voters elected Frank Lautenberg for U.S. Senator, Steve Rothman for Congress, Dennis McNerney for County Executive, Bernadette McPherson and David L. Ganz as Freeholders, and Steve Weinstein for Council.

When given the choice between Deputy Mayor Steve Weinstein and Howard Hyde, residents chose Weinstein by approximately 21 percentage points. (5,739 votes for Weinstein and 3,709 votes for Hyde).  This election was won by such a sizeable margin because voters felt that Deputy Mayor Weinstein's achievements and ideas were more in line with their vision for Fair Lawn.

Deputy Mayor Weinstein greeted residents around town nearly every day in order to introduce himself, address any problems or concerns they may have, and inform them of municipal programs that they may be interested in. Furthermore, he received a large number of volunteers, who assisted in handing out literature and reaching out to neighbors because they believed that Steve Weinstein and the Democratic platform were best for Fair Lawn's future.

Lastly, I have to believe that voters of Fair Lawn were turned off by Mr. Hyde's lack of ideas and constant criticism of the Council. Here in Fair Lawn we have a very educated and informed community that is not persuaded or influenced by the misrepresentations of a campaign.

Fair Lawn is a town that consists of almost 10,000 undeclared voters, who do not affiliate with a particular political party. It can be conceived that most of these 10,000 residents vote for the better candidate rather than political party, as was the case in our municipal, county, and state elections.

In elections there is no substitute for hard work and good ideas, both of which Steve Weinstein brings to the Fair Lawn council.
