Remembering September 11th
By Chris Neidenberg Tributes to remember three residents killed in the Sept. 11 World Trade Center (WTC) terrorist attacks - through a memorial service and permanent monuments - are being considered by different groups.
At two recent work sessions, governing body members detailed efforts under review by the Chamber of Commerce and Fair Lawn Garden Club - which are contemplating permanent memorials - and St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church.
Mayor David L. Ganz said church representatives have approached the municipality about setting aside a day for an event marking the somber date's upcoming anniversary. "I think the events on Sept. 11 are something no one in this council chamber is ever going to forget," said Ganz. "Anybody who has been to Ground Zero has an attachment to that site," the mayor added.
In previously discussing the chamber's own initiative, Ganz said the council would gladly come on board - provided the victims' families also backed the memorial. He later told Fair Lawn News that he would like to see the Garden Club and chamber work together on a common memorial, given that both groups each want to place something on the lawn of the municipal building's "memorial area," which now includes a veterans' monument.
As
for a memorial service, Deputy Mayor for Community Affairs Martin Etler
discussed the possibility of having the municipality jointly participate
in some event with members of the local clergy. Ganz called upon the
council to appoint "a coordinator" for any borough-wide memorial
event. He explained that the individual would liaison with the different
groups, and report back to the council "on a regular basis."
