Letters on Fair Lawn News Coverage

Covering Arrests -- Yes

I approve of the Fair Lawn News carrying crime news.  We must not kid ourselves.   When we first moved here 31 years ago from Brooklyn we became friendly with a five year old boy named 'Harry'... he was murdered along with his Mother and her Sister a part of a drug problem.  Shocked Joan and me but we cannot ignore that crime is everywhere 'Harry' would be about 36 today.   Thanks and congratulations on the [Fair Lawn News] 2nd Anniversary.  Joan and I just celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary on June 7th.  A great marriage it has been and will continue to be.

John Nichols

Covering Arrests -- No

I just want to put in my vote on the Police blotter on the Fair Lawn News page.  I vote a  resounding NO!   Remember the huge flap over publishing the arrest of Mr. Jewel after the Olympic Park bombing.  Poor guy still hasn't been able to repair his reputation!

I just don't think it's fair.  I would, however, agree to publishing convictions rather than arrests.

Emergency Planning

I am offering a suggestion as to what should be written about. In the most recent events of 9/11,  I believe that there should be some sort of article(s) written about "emergency procedures" that should be followed in the Event of a catastrophe especially after the FBI/US Government has stated that more terrorism acts should be expected. Its hindsight now that if there were procedures that were  posted on the Fairlawn website and/or in the Newspaper that people could printout and use in case of emergency it would help immensely in a tragic circumstance. Scott Clinton Elrich

[From the Editor: Thanks for the suggestion.  See the first of a series of emergency planning articles in the current edition.]

Follow-Up on the July Photo of the Month.
The garbage can that is featured in your photo of the month has been moved. I personally moved it yesterday. The can was returned to the bus
stop where it was originally placed. It had migrated a good 35 feet from where it was supposed to be! The intent was never to have it in the middle of the sidewalk like that  Our "street cans" all they have to do is call the Recycling Office and I will look into it.  Thanks,

Ron Lottermann, Recycling Coordinator

Sizzling Real Estate Market (Regarding Real Estate Article)

What do I think about the housing market?  What do I think?

I don't know what to think about it. I am quite curious as to what these people do for a living to afford the prices of these homes. How many doctors and lawyers have we got around this area anyway? Secondly, I wonder what possesses them to spend that kind of money on something that is not really worth that kind of money. If I could write out a check for the entire amount tomorrow, I would not spend it on a house that size and that old. It makes no sense. Is someone out there who could explain it to me?

More Info on Typical Homes (Regarding Real Estate Article)

Though not typical Fair Lawn Capes, between Radburn and the Glen Rock border are several streets with ranch homes built circa 1950.  The two model homes used to sell the development are still pretty much intact on Fair Lawn Avenue near the Edison School.

These homes were originally sold between $11,000 and $13,000 depending on features such as lot size (average 75x100), basement or slab and upgrades such as insulation!  In the mid 1970's, these homes, if maintained but not expanded, sold in the $50,000 to $60,000 range and currently can bring as much as $300,000 - but finding one without an addition is rare.
