Letters to the Editor

See Letters About the September Attack at the Trade Center.

School Librarian

I was reading today's Record, and in it is the obituary of Miss Wilson, the former librarian at Memorial. She was an odd sort of person, but the ultimate librarian.

In eighth grade, I did a science project on the effects of diet on mice. I started out with four and by the time the project was due, I had, literally, hundreds of mice. I was giving them away to anyone I could get to hold still, and the rest were in a couple of fish tanks in Mr. Chiapetta's classroom. Keeping the tanks clean was a chore, and I would stay after school twice a week to tend to the mice.

I had study hall in the library, and one day Miss Wilson overheard me talking about them and asked if she could come down and see them. She was famous for raising baby quail, a fact that she frequently worked into conversations no matter the subject, and was delighted to hold all the baby mice for me, telling me how much they reminded her of the quail. From that day until the end of the school year, she made a point of helping me, and became sort of a senior member of our little clique of thirteen-year-olds in study hall, pretending to be fascinated by our interests and social machinations. (There is no more complicated social life than that of thirteen-year-old girls!)

Over the years, I would sometimes run into her in town. I always asked if she had any more quail, and she always asked about my legions of pets. And I always left the conversation with a smile - at her quirky approach to life, and her good heart.

Not a bad legacy for a librarian. My heart goes out to her friends and family.

Thanks To The Police

I just want to extend a word of praise for the Fair Lawn Police Department.  I think that they are just great and time and time again, experiences with them, whether it be asking for information or calling regarding parking, have been wonderful. I feel very secure knowing that they are also EMT trained. This is highly important because the police in town also answer calls to help the elderly and folks in poor health. I have called them many times to help me with my father when he had fallen. They were highly respectful and diplomatic. With all said, I am proud to have such knowledgeable police in my town.

Copy of Letter Sent To Pat Schuber

It has recently come to my attention that Bergen County has rejected all of the recommendations of Fair Lawn's Pedestrian Safety Task Force for improving safety on Fair Lawn Avenue. In fact, it appears that the county engineers had not even read the Task Force report.  I and many residents of Fair Lawn find this situation intolerable. What do you plan to do about this?
