Community School

A recent Board of Education meeting began with a presentation by the Community School Manager Joseph Tedeschi. According to Mr. Tedeschi:

The state has withdrawn funding for the English As A Second Language Program but the district will continue to offer the program for a fee. (It had been free.)

The Community School is trying to find more funding for the deaf program.

The summer camp program was 10% over capacity this past summer.

Driver’s Education Program

During the public portion of the meeting, a group of parents questioned Superintendent Bruce Watson and the Board about changes in the behind-the-wheel Driver’s Education Program. Prior to July 1, 2001 the district had offered six free hours of road instruction to all Fair Lawn students who had passed their written driving test and applied for the road practice. Fair Lawn High School (FLHS) students will now pay $85 for the on-the-road training, and Fair Lawn students who attend high schools other than FLHS will pay $270.

Numerous parents asked 'Why should the school board charge more for Fair Lawn students who do not attend FLHS, when they pay the same taxes as FLHS parents?'. Mr. Watson responded that the Board did not have the money to continue to pay for the program and this was how they decided to do it. Otherwise, he said, they would have had to drop the program entirely.
