June - July 2001 Edition

2001 Election   This year, Fair Lawn residents will vote in races for two Fair Lawn Council members, three County Freeholders, two state Assemblymen, one state Senator and a Governor.  The only contested primaries in June are the Republican gubernatorial race and the Democratic state legislative races.   The candidates are listed alphabetically below, incumbents first.   Borough Council David Ganz (Democrat) is seeking re-election.  Also running are:  Allan Caan (Democrat), Mark Sedaka (Republican) and David Whalen (Republican).      Freeholders Two Democratic Freeholders (Douglas Bern and Dennis McNerney) are running for re-election.  Also running are Paul Callan (Republican), Richard Mola (Republican), Toni O’Malley (Democrat) and James Tedesco (Republican).  The Board of Freeholders acts as a County legislature.   State Legislators  After the state redistricted every legislative seat based on the 2001 Census, Fair Lawn became part of the 38th legislative district along with Elmwood Park, Fort Lee, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Lodi, Paramus, Ridgefield, Saddle Brook, South Hackensack and Teterboro.   For decades, Fair Lawn had been part of the 40th legislative district, which historically elected Republican legislators.  The new 38th district has more registered Democrats than Republicans.  This year, the Democrats have primaries for both the Senate and Assembly races.   Two of Fair Lawn’s current legislative representatives, Assemblyman David Russo of Ridgewood and Senator Henry McNamara of Wyckoff will run in the 40th district this year.    - State Senate Republican Louis Kosco is running for re-election.  The Democrats have a primary between Joseph Caniglio (Paramus) and Helene Herbert (Little Ferry).     - State Assembly The two incumbents seeking re-election are both Republicans: Nicholas Felice (Fair Lawn) and Rose Heck (Hasbrouck Heights).    Four Democratic candidates are running in the June primary:  Matt Ahearn (former Deputy Mayor of Fair Lawn), Kay Nest of Fort Lee, Frank Meo of Hasbrouck Heights, and Bermari Roig-Eichler of Cliffside   Governor For Governor, the Republicans are holding a primary between Bob Franks and Bret Schundler.  Democratic Jim McGreevey is running unopposed in the primary.
