Broadway Recommendations and Status (Summary)

 

In June 2000, the Broadway Advisory Committee (led by local attorney Charles Tregidgo) developed a set of recommendations to improve Broadway.  In November 2001, Mr. Tregidgo provided Fair Lawn News with an update of the Committee's list, to reflect the status of each of the recommendations.    

 

Fair Lawn News will periodically update this table as more information becomes available. (See Details for more information about each of these recommendations.)  

 

Recommendation Status
1. Investigate availability and suitability of certain vacant properties for use as parking. No investigation conducted.  One property sold, one property developed.
2. Consider extension of Office/Business zone to a depth of 250 feet from Broadway. Planning Board reviewed suggestion.  No action by Council.  Public Meeting on 11/29/01
3. Provide more pedestrian crosswalks. No action taken so far as is known
4. Encourage cooperative parking agreements No action taken so far as is known
5. Review signage directing shoppers to existing parking. No action taken so far as is known.
6. Consider creating cul-de-sacs on the side streets off Broadway and create mini-parks No action taken so far as is known.  (Mini-playground installed at 29th Street/Pellack Drive.)
7. Install bicycle racks. No action taken so far as is known. 
8.  Improve Train Station  
  - Retain/expand train station.  Unknown.
  - Expand commuter parking at train station in cooperation with Elmwood Park. No meetings have been arranged between elected Fair Lawn and Elmwood Park officials to date. 
  - Request that NJ Transit construct an elevated walkway over Broadway Unknown
9.  Conduct comprehensive traffic study:  
  -  Flashing lights at Warren Point School. Unknown.
  - Emergency vehicle activation of traffic signals. Unknown.
  - Reconfigure traffic island at Plaza Road. Unknown.
  - Consider permitting left hand turns from Route 4 West onto Midland Avenue. Unknown.
  - Consider changing location of the stop signs located at 30th Street and Rosalie Street. Unknown.
  - Review location of all bus stops. The bus stop at the corner of Broadway and 30th Street has been eliminated.
  - Install ladder striped crosswalks. Unknown.
  - Redesign traffic lights and make crosswalks safer Unknown.
  - Implement appropriate recommendations from Fair Lawn Avenue Pedestrian/Bicycle Corridor Study Unknown.
  - Delineate on-street parking areas and handicapped parking. Unknown.
  - Install clear signage for directional, parking and speeds. Unknown.
10. Re-examine zoning and consider changing to permit restaurants and cafes, book stores, coffee stores and the like in the OBS-2 zone. Unknown.
11. Streamline process for site plan and other borough approvals. Unknown.
12. Review the sign ordinance to allow larger signs. On 6/18/01, the Planning Board agreed that the sign ordinance should be redrawn.
13. Seek available funding to help upgrade storefronts/facades. Unknown.
14. Seek grant money for developing merchant window displays standards Unknown.
15. Aesthetic Improvements  
  -  Plan trees and shrubs Unknown.
  - Replicate landscape work at Warren Point School to other parts of borough. Unknown.
  - Repair sidewalks and curbs Unknown.
  - Install benches especially at bus stops. Unknown.
  - Borough should encourage business owners to upgrade and maintain landscaping. Unknown.
  - Borough should encourage merchants to clean areas outside (daily) Unknown.
  - Borough should install new trash receptacles. New trash receptacles have been placed on Broadway.
16. Improve lighting Unknown.
17. Place flower planters and trash receptacles uniformly. Unknown.
18. Stricter enforcement of traffic, litter, and property maintenance laws. Unknown.
